Advice when specifying a Cure It Roof
Installers
Cure It roofing materials have a tried and tested pedigree for roofing and waterproofing applications. The Cure It GRP system is manufactured under ISO9001 certification and has been independently certified by LABC (a body representing all building control offices in England, Wales and Scotland). The system has also been comprehensively tested to ETAG005 standard.
However, as with any roofing material, Cure It roofing materials are only as effective if they are properly fitted. You should ensure that your roofing materials are installed by a contractor that is competent to install them. The following are a quick guide to a few key things to check:
- Has the installer had experience of installing the Cure It roofing system previously or attended a training course? – Cure It operates a nationwide introductory installer training course, but does not operate an ‘approved’ or ‘registered’ installer scheme.
- How long has the contractor been installing GRP roofs?- Do they have testimonials for previous jobs; can you view the roof if it is local? Are there photographs and contact details?
- Is the contractor providing a workmanship guarantee? Always ensure that a sufficient workmanship guarantee is provided to cover the period of the Cure It materials guarantee (20 years).
Quotations
Quotations can vary considerably with the services that are offered by different roofing contractors. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but you should ensure that the quotation includes all of the works you would like to be completed.
- Will the old roof be removed and disposed of (is a skip included in the cost?). -The old roof covering should almost always be removed, (with the exception of concrete where concrete primer can be used) as the decking needs to be firmly fixed to the structure and it can be difficult to locate the joists if they are not visible when the decking is fitted.
- Will the installer check that the joists are secure and re-bed, replace or include noggins as required. -This may incur an extra cost, as the joists are not likely to be visible when the contractor first quotes for the works, but the joists must be fit for purpose before the Cure It system is installed. The joists should be firmly fixed and span no more than 600mm.
- Does the quote include fitting OSB18mm T & G boards to the joists, incorporating insulation, vapour barrier and sub-deck if required? -OSB3 18mm T & G is recommended as it forms a strong and stable deck with inter-locking joints and provides a good bonding surface for the laminate.
- Are the wall flashings to be replaced with the rest of the roof? If so will they be replaced with GRP simulated lead or traditional lead? -Some lead flashing may be serviceable and might be re-used, but it is important that these are surveyed with the rest of the roof.
